At home/ field tips you can do on your own

Focus Flexibility

Accommodation of the eyes is the ability to change focus from a distant object to near object (like the autofocus on a camera).

The following activity helps train your accommodation :

Focus on a near object such as computer screen or words in a book and change focus and look at a distance object (such as a picture or clock hanging on the wall, or a TV across the room). When one of the objects is clear switch to the other object and do multiple repetitions.

Eye Dominance

Just as you might be left/ right handed, or left/ right footed you can be left or right eyed. This is called your eye/ ocular dominance. Your dominant eye processes visual information slightly faster than your non-dominant eye.

Your dominance is important for aiming sports (like archery or shooting) and in activities like putting in golf.

To find your dominant eye follow the following steps:

  1. Extend your arms out in front of you and create a triangular opening between your thumbs and forefingers by placing your hands together at a 45-degree angle (see animation).
  2. With both eyes open, center this triangular opening on a distant object — such as a wall clock or door knob.
  3. Close your left eye.
  4. If the object stays centered, your right eye (the one that’s open) is your dominant eye. If the object is no longer framed by your hands, your left eye is your dominant eye.
